Overview

​You can sponsor:

  • Your brother, sister, nephew, niece, grandson or granddaughter, who is orphaned, under the age of 18, and not married or in a common-law relationship
  • Another relative if you do not have a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner, or one of the following living relatives below (excluding the person you wish to sponsor) which you could sponsor instead:
    • a child
    • a mother or father
    • brother or sister
    • uncle or aunt
    • nephew or niece

AND:

  • you do not have any of the relatives mentioned above who:
    • who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons registered under the Indian Act
    • have a permanent residence application currently being processed

You can sponsor if you are:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • A Canadian permanent resident living in Canada or a Canadian citizen
  • Not in prison, bankrupt, under a removal order (if a permanent resident) or charged with a serious offence

Who may qualify for this service?

You are at least 18 years old.

You are a Canadian citizen, Canadian permanent resident or person registered under the Canadian Indian Act.

You live in Canada when you apply and throughout the application process.

You meet the applicable income requirements.

You agree to financially support the sponsored relative and any accompanying family members.

You are not subject to a sponsorship bar or another condition that prevents sponsorship.

You are sponsoring an orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece or grandchild who is under 18, unmarried and whose parents have both died.

You have no closer relative to sponsor and no relative in Canada with Canadian citizenship, permanent residence or registered Indian status.

The sponsored relative is related to you by blood or adoption.

The sponsored relative is admissible to Canada.

What you'll need

After your consultation, we’ll provide a personalized checklist outlining the documents and information needed for your matter, along with any relevant templates and next-step guidance.

  • Proof of the sponsor’s Canadian citizenship, permanent residence or registered Indian status.
  • Proof that the sponsor currently lives in Canada.
  • Application to Sponsor, Sponsorship Agreement and Undertaking.
  • Financial Evaluation form.
  • Recent Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment.
  • Employment letter, pay statements or other proof of income.
  • Proof of the relationship between the sponsor and the relative, such as birth or adoption records.
  • Death certificates for both parents when sponsoring an orphaned relative.
  • Proof of the orphaned relative’s age and unmarried status, if applicable.
  • Family-tree records and evidence showing that no closer eligible relative can be sponsored, if applicable.
  • Evidence that the sponsor has no other relative in Canada who is a citizen, permanent resident or person registered under the Canadian Indian Act, if applicable.
  • Passport or travel document for the sponsored relative.
  • Birth certificates and other identity or civil-status documents.
  • Marriage or common-law documents for accompanying family members, if applicable.
  • Documents for dependent children, if applicable.
  • Police certificates.
  • Immigration medical examination results when requested by IRCC.
  • Permanent residence photographs.
  • Completed application forms and proof of payment.
  • Country-specific documents, if required.
  • Certified translations for documents not written in English or French.
