Matkowsky Immigration Law is now Unified Immigration Lawyers. Same firm, same lawyers — new name.
We help individuals, families, professionals, and businesses navigate Canadian and U.S. immigration matters with practical legal advice, clear communication, and a strong understanding of complex immigration pathways.
Immigration decisions can affect careers, families, businesses, and long-term plans. Our role is to simplify the legal issues, identify practical pathways, and help clients understand what matters most before they move forward.
The firm combines legal strategy with an accessible client experience. Whether a case involves a first application, a refusal, an appeal, or a cross-border concern, the goal is to give each client a clear understanding of the process and the strongest available next step.
Every immigration matter comes with different goals, timelines, and challenges. We take the time to understand the full picture, explain the available options, and build a clear strategy for moving forward.
We explain the legal issue, options, and risks in plain language so clients can make informed decisions.
Each matter is reviewed for the strongest pathway, evidence requirements, and potential complications.
Clients receive structured next steps and updates during important stages of the immigration process.
Canadian and U.S. immigration concerns are handled with attention to long-term mobility and timing.
Since 2017, we have focused on the immigration files that call for specialized experience. Many firms handle straightforward applications. Fewer have the litigation background to take on files with multiple prior refusals, findings of inadmissibility or misrepresentation, or matters headed to the Federal Court. That is the work we built this firm around. Over 800 Google reviews and hundreds more from clients around the world reflect what that focus has meant for families and businesses on both sides of the border.
Sonia Akilov founded the firm in Toronto with a clear mandate: take on the files where the stakes are highest. From the beginning, our work centred on criminal, medical and misrepresentation inadmissibility, procedural fairness letters and applications with a history of refusals. Every file was handled directly by a lawyer.
Our lawyers built a litigation practice before the Immigration and Refugee Board and the Federal Court of Canada. We challenge unfair decisions, overturn refusals and win appeals on files that require deep knowledge of immigration law and procedure. Our Federal Court win in Toki v. Canada established new law. Along the way, we expanded into U.S. immigration, so clients with ties to both countries can rely on one firm for both.
